I was born in Ely, Minnesota, where my shop is located, but when I was nine my family moved to Los Angeles.  After many years and many adventures (including college, Peace Corps in Nigeria, travels in Europe, teaching English in Greece, and teaching in California), I came back home to Ely and opened my shop in the building my grandfather, August Haapala, used to have his shoe repair business in.  When I returned to Ely, after all my adventures, I also met and married Carl Karasti.  We have a daughter, Anna, who is now married herself, and mother to our first grandchild, Jacob.

Carl has lived here all his life. He is the one who figures out how to fix things and keeps things such as looms and spinning wheels working.  He has done some weaving in the past, including some items for sale.  He is also the computer person - the one who does the email, and the one who created this web site.  Besides helping with things for the shop, Carl is self-employed in his own business which you can learn more about on his Architectural Drafting and Design web site.
